There are so many different takes on what an empowered multiple is that it is not funny. I don’t even want to get into describing all the different takes on it. So since we are the ones working on this site then we are going to post our take on it. To see other takes please feel free to go to Google and type in Empowered Multiples in the search box. So here is our take….. Empowered multiplicity is not a fight between natural born and trauma based. It’s also not saying that because one doesn’t want to integrate that it makes them empowered. The biggest thing about empowered multiplicity is simple, making the choice for yourselves. Empowerment is about accepting yourselves as a strong and complete being, that you are not a disorder nor a label. You are people. It’s accepting what is the best for you and your system. If therapy and medication is what brings you to your highest level of functioning and you go to therapy and take the meds because you know that you as a whole are doing this for the good of your system and not because its what you are “supposed” to do. it is keeping the system at the highest level of functioning. It’s also saying that the system is OK with out therapy or medications if this is the case for you. We think it parallels medical situations, choosing to go to the doctor with a respiratory infection. Its fine to self treat a cold, bronchitis is a mid line and pneumonia needing medical help. Its your responsibility to pay attention to yourselves to decide if you have a cold situation vs the pneumonia. It is about taking responsibility, and accepting the consequences of group behavior. You may not like that while someone else was fronting they robbed a mini mart but you all deal with the consequences with it. It’s fine if you are mad about it, but you can’t play the blame game either. Empowered multiples don’t get to run about saying but you have no right to be mad at me, it was was Billy, even if Billy did it. Empowered multiples have to be in charge of themselves. They don’t have therapists or others hovering over them asking if they are OK or what not. They must recognize if there is something wrong and take care of it. And, no, there is no such thing as perfect adherence to this. Everyone has bad days. Empowered multiples work their asses off to get back on track. |
