What causes DID?

This is a question that plagues the psychiatric community. There aremany questions that arise in the exploration of DID, and there are a fewknowns. We will explore the knowns in this segment, and the myths.

ballMyths And Truths

Myth #1 Multiple Personality can only happen in instances of severeabuse such as Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA)

Fact #1 DID can occur in any one with any trauma. In the story of Evein The Three Faces of Eve Eve at age 10 months had witnessed deathof a few workers. In the 10 month old child the reality of death was toomuch to bear so the split occurred.

Myth #2 Multiple Personality can only happen if the trauma occurs beforethe age of three.

Fact #2 DID is most often found in those who had abuse by the earlyage of 3, but can happen up to the age of 9. It is true that only childrencan be flexible enough to create the personalities, but the age in whichthe trauma occurs if below the age of 9 is irrelivant.

Myth #3 Multiple Personality must have many check offs to exist. Suchcheck offs include sexual abuse, ritual abuse, Satanic ritual abuse, andall before the age of three.

Fact #3 As seen in fact #1 abuse is not a requirement of DID. Thereare a few common traits in DID, such as high hypnotisability and the useof self hypnosis is what makes it possible to dissociate into the alterpersonalities.

ballHow does it happen?

When the child faces an instance of unbearable trauma, they feel thatthe only way to escape the terror is to imagine that the abuse is happeningto another person, not them. Intensely imagining this the child feels saferand removed from the trauma. The child is often in fear of their lifeat the dissociation, and how the child determines life threatening is upto the child. The fear of abandonment by a parent may be veiwed as lifethreatening, where as another child may be held at gunpoint and fear lifeat this point.

ballBut Aren't We ALL Multiple?

Multiplicity in a general sense would imply yes we are. We all haveour work face and our home face and our party face. But, not every onehas

1) Abuse (or trauma) in which dissociation is necessary to survive

2) Periods of time loss in which one does not know what theiractions were.

3) Evidence of alters existence such as handwriting that isunfamiliar.
